RESTORATION PROJECTS
JULY 2019
We recently acquired a 1927 clear vision gas pump!
Dismantling the gas pump from the location.
|
Sandy Barrett removing a panel.
We tried to remove what we could to lighten the load to be transported to the shop for restoration. |
The pump was sitting under a canopy for years but it was removed a while back thus exposing the pump to the elements.
I took the pump into the back yard under a canopy to strip down the rest of it.
Now to power-wash the gunk off!
Look at the difference between powerwashed and not! The base is safely inside. Now it's time to work on the cylinder, cap and globe.
|
Even the glass cylinder became cloudy.
We're down to the skeleton now!
I was hoping to save the original hose but it was rusted through on the inside in spots and it just snapped.
Fortunately the globe was kept indoors and was in relatively good shape.
|
SEPTEMBER 2019
Over decades of the pump being painted I had to remove the paint off of the brass ID plates. The cap was cleaned up with a grinder and any holes filled with body fill.
|
The cylinder cleaned up nicely, Now it's time for paint.
Looking good. Now waiting for a package to arrive with some reproduction pieces to add.
|
OCTOBER 2019
And here it is. A replacement hose, decals, glass cylinder gaskets and ceramic light fixtures (2 for the side lights and 1 for the globe) that were missing from the pump. Many thanks to Jim's Garage for supplying the reproduction parts.

There we go. Top half completed!
|
NOVEMBER 2019
Now to get to the skins as they are called. A little bit of grinding and a lot of sanding is what's needed! With Winter settling in here in Ontario soon, some things I will just have to leave until spring.
|
I'm using a satin oil paint on everything so the paint will smooth out nicely as if it had been sprayed.
|
JANUARY 2020
We had a mild spell so I was able to sand down the second cover.
|
Things are starting to come together now...
|
.....and the covers are done!
PAST RESTORATION PROJECTS
JANUARY 2013
A number of years ago we purchased a gas pump for a museum display to impress upon the visitors that petroleum is actually
a "Fossil Fuel" derived from quickly buried plant and and animal matter. With the vast amount of oil that comes out of the ground one must conclude that a catastrophic event must have taken place in the past to bury all that biological matter. If it was slowly buried it would have long rotted away so there would be no oil in the present world.
Finally the move is on to restore this pump!

Finally the move is on to restore this pump!
In the shop. The first step is to take everything apart for cleaning and prepping for painting.
