RESTORATION PROJECTS
JULY 2019
We recently acquired a 1927 clear vision gas pump!
Gasoline or "Liquid Fossils" is great evidence that plant and animal matter was buried quickly.
This will be a good addition to the museum connecting rapid burial to petroleum.

Picture
Dismantling the gas pump from the location.
Sandy Barrett removing a panel.
We tried to remove what we could to lighten the load to be transported to the shop for restoration.

Picture
The pump was sitting under a canopy for years but it was removed a while back thus exposing the pump to the elements.
Picture
I took the pump into the back yard under a canopy to strip down the rest of it.
Picture
Now to power-wash the gunk off!
Look at the difference between powerwashed and not!

Picture
The base is safely inside. Now it's time to work on the cylinder, dome and globe.
Picture
Even the glass cylinder became cloudy.

Picture
We're down to the skeleton now!
Picture
I was hoping to save the original hose but it was rusted through on the inside in spots and it just snapped.
Picture
Fortunately the globe was kept indoors and was in relatively good shape.
SEPTEMBER 2019
Picture
Over decades of the pump being painted I had to remove the paint off of the brass ID plates. The dome was cleaned up with a grinder and any holes filled with body fill.
Picture
The cylinder cleaned up nicely, Now it's time for paint.
Picture
Looking good. Now waiting for a package to arrive with some reproduction pieces to add.
OCTOBER 2019
Picture
And here it is. A replacement hose, decals, glass cylinder gaskets and ceramic light fixtures (2 for the side lights and 1 for the globe) that were missing from the pump. Many thanks to Jim's Garage for supplying the reproduction parts.

There we go. Top half completed!
NOVEMBER 2019
Picture
Now to get to the skins as they are called. A little bit of grinding and a lot of sanding is what's needed! With Winter settling in here in Ontario soon, some things I will just have to leave until spring.
Picture
I'm using a satin oil paint on everything so the paint will smooth out nicely as if it had been sprayed.
JANUARY 2020

Picture
We had a mild spell so I was able to sand down the second cover.
Things are starting to come together now...
Picture
.....and the covers are done!
OCTOBER 2021
Finally back at it after the project had to go on the back burner due to covid, a move and family health issues. There wasn't much left to do except paint the bases, do the wiring and assemble it.
Picture
The pump frame was laid on saw horses and 3 coats of red needed to be painted on the base and cylinder base. I didn't realize that the pump handle bolt was busted off in the pump housing so thanks again to Sandy Barrett this time for drilling the bolt out and re-tapping the housing.
Picture
The wire is simply 3, 6 foot extension cords that i cut and spliced to the ceramic lamp bases. I plugged the 3 cords into a single one and now can just plug it into the wall.
Picture
Now for the dome and globe.
Picture
Nevertheless the end result looked great! Note the height. The pump stands over 10 feet high!
Picture
This part requires that the pump stands upright to do the wiring and assembling.
Picture
Let there be light!
Picture
Another glitch. For some reason the side lights did not line up with the sides of the covers so I had to improvise by removing the top bolt that went from one of the tubes up through the cylinder cap. Only then was I able to turn the cap and line everything up. Perhaps this cap was from another model? Normally the lights protrude out the bottom of the cylinder cap, not the sides as in this one.

PAST RESTORATION PROJECTS
JANUARY 2013
Picture
A number of years ago we purchased a gas pump for a museum display to impress upon the visitors that petroleum is actually
a "Fossil Fuel" derived from quickly buried plant and and animal matter. With the vast amount of oil that comes out of the ground one must conclude that a catastrophic event must have taken place in the past to bury all that biological matter. If it was slowly buried it would have long rotted away so there would be no oil in the present world.

Finally the move is on to restore this pump!
Picture
In the shop. The first step is to take everything apart for cleaning and prepping for painting.

February  13th 2013
Spray painting day!
Picture
All reassembled and now the wait is on for an order of decals coming in from the U.S.
and to top it off a lighting globe. What brand of gasoline will it be? Find out soon!
Picture
Arrival of the decals. Deciding the gas company brand was a "No Brainer",
Sinclair Dino blends perfectly with the fossil fuel point and to top it off....
Picture
The gas globe!
Picture
But one more thing needs to be added....
Stay tuned for more updates!
